Introduce yourself, what you do and how you got started!
I’m Selena, by day I work as a graphic designer and after work you can find me running Selena Ashley Designs. I offer Graphic design services and custom handlettering. I hand paint wall murals, tshirts, world globes and handlettered prints.. I also teach classes and wholesale my prints.
In 2014, I was getting married and wanted to hand letter and design all my signs and envelopes, so I just started practicing. In 2015, I decided to start a hand lettering challenge for myself on instagram. As an artist, you can feel insecure and I wanted to let go on that insecurity and just create. For 365 days, I created and posted a quote everyday, my account just continued to grow and people would request that days art. It just grew from there. Now I get messages on Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and Email for custom designs every day and I love it.
What are your current long and short term goals for your business?
Honestly, I haven’t figured it all out. Is that bad? My overall goal is just to continue to create, learn, and improve because that is something I love to do. I want to inspire others. I want to be transparent, and honest and create beautiful pieces.
What is the best thing about your job?
I love what my customers dream up. I love knowing what quotes inspire them and I love creating art that will hang in their home or that they’ve gifted to someone else. I’ve even hand lettered for tattoos. It is amazing to me that someone loved my lettering enough to keep it forever.
What is one thing you have done that you are most proud of?
Starting a bucket list. In my twenties I created a list of all the things I wanted to accomplish and I continue to add to that. Once I put something on my list I get an itch to accomplish it. I put starting a business on that list! Getting a masters! Skydiving! I’ve accomplished so many things because I didn’t allow fear to stop me. Too many times people wait for things to be perfect. I believe that when given the opportunity you should take it. If that’s a trip or a once in a lifetime project – jump.
If you could give one piece of advice to other women what would it be?
Never stop learning. Continue to grow and challenge yourself, however, you don’t always have to say yes. The quote, just say yes and you’ll figure it out anyways, this can be true, but make sure by saying yes to one thing, you aren’t saying no to something you would have loved to do. Don’t feel like you have to overwork yourself to be successful, because you are afraid of saying no and don’t take less than you deserve if people don’t see the value in your work. You’ll find the tribe that truly appreciates you.
