Happy Wednesday!
One of my most asked questions is “How did you get into boudoir?”
To be honest, I first heard about boudoir in 2015 which was about a year after I started my childhood hobby of photography back up. A friend reached out and asked me to do a boudoir session for her. I had no idea what boudoir even was. After looking it up I was shocked. I thought to myself “You want me to take photos of you like THAT?” She was also a very self conscious person so I was not sure I was going to do her any justice.
I did agree to do the shoot. If I said I wasn’t nervous to do it though I would very much be lying. The first time you do anything it is not usually any good right? So I thought I had totally bombed it and I was dreading showing her the images. Even though I didn’t want to, I showed her anyway.
Her reaction was nothing that I was expecting. Actually, I don’t think I had any expectations for how she would react. I definitely didn’t think I would see her so happy she had tears in her eyes. That threw me for a loop. She had the biggest smile across her face and she kept saying how great she felt about herself. And that made me feel good that I could have that big of an impact on how she saw herself.
I didn’t really have any plans to continue doing boudoir. However, that friend referred another friend of hers and then THAT friend referred another friend…and the ball just kept rolling from there. It was incredibly rewarding to help women feel good about themselves. I was hooked. A couple years later I was booking only weddings and boudoir. Honestly, weddings were burning me out. I was spending all my weekends away from home while my daughter was still tiny. I was missing those moments. I also really wanted to book more boudoir but I couldn’t because my workload with weddings was so high.
One day, I decided I was done. I was going to stop booking weddings and focus my entire career on boudoir. That was the scariest things I have ever done because at the time weddings were 90% of my income. But I did it. Within a couple months I had completely rebranded my business into a boudoir only studio, started mentoring under some of the best boudoir photographers in the country and went balls to the wall in the industry.
Six years later, I am still doing what I love every day. I can’t imagine doing anything else with my life. I have also coupled this business with Women Empowerment and Advocacy in many forms. Not many people get to say they go to bed every night fulfilled and happy with what they do but I can. Working with women in this capacity lights a fire in my soul.
Best. Job. Ever.
