On Wednesdays we blog! Hey girl hey!
But seriously. I get this question a lot. “What is boudoir?”
The actual definition from Merriam-Webster says boudoir is “a woman’s dressing room, bedroom, or private sitting room”. It is obviously a french word that most people have a hard time pronouncing. There are two different ways of pronouncing the word boudoir. The less common way is the french version “Boo-dwah”. However, like all things here in America we have made it our own. The Americanized way of saying it, and the most common, is “boo-dwar”. I always get a little chuckle when people try saying it and then totally butcher it.
Okay but what actually IS boudoir? The way I like to describe boudoir is that it is the modern day version of pin up mixed with glamour shots from the 80s. It is a form of photography that is meant to be empowering and powerful. Yeah, it is mostly images of women in lingerie on a bed but it has definitely changed over the years like most things have. The industry itself is pretty diverse which one might find surprising. You’ll find boudoir photographers that are heavily into erotica, outdoor, moody, light and airy, themed. There is certainly something for everyone’s tastes.
My style seems to be more earthy. I gravitate towards light but also love shadows and strategic highlighting. Typically I am a little more hands on with posing but I am working on being a little more fluid and exploring with more natural images. I find my work grows and changes as I do. I try not to set too many rules for myself. I have always been called to create and that often looks like going…just…out of the box.
