You’re probably going to think I am crazy because this post blog post is about how to choose the boudoir photographer that is right for you. “But Alexa! Shouldn’t you tell me that YOU are the best photographer for me?!”
Well yes…and no. As much as I would love to photograph each and every one of you, I simply do not have the capacity. This is why #communityovercompetition is a beautiful thing. It would be physically impossible to shoot all the women in our community and around the state that want a boudoir session. Here are my tips to finding the right boudoir photographer that is right for you:
- First and foremost you should look for a photographer whose work that you love. Do you like their style? Their editing? Their posing? Do you find yourself going “Omg I love that!” When you see them post a new image? If you don’t absolutely love their style then maybe they aren’t the one for you. And that is okay! Picturing yourself in their images is a big indicator if you are meant to work with them or not.
- Are they consistent with communication? What I mean is that if you inquire about their services how long does it take for them to get back with you? Is it hours or days? Is the information about their sessions clear regarding cost, preparation, etc? If you don’t hear from them in days that would be a big red flag. Of course if they are on vacation or away from the office due to a health issue then that is different. However, that should still be communicated. If their communication with you is sloppy and inconsistent, can you really expect the session itself to be any different?
- Are they showing up on socials? Now I am not saying that have to be on every platform and posting every day. Hell even I don’t do that. Do they have at least one that they post on fairly consistently? My go to’s are Fb with my Boudoir by Alexa VIP group and Instagram. However you can also find boudoir photographers on all the other platforms too. As long as they are showing up somewhere and on a regular basis you should be good to go.
- Read. Reviews. This one really should be a no brainer. Reviews in our day and age is one of the most beautiful things about technology. I find that Google and Facebook reviews are the most common and people tend to focus on one platform or another. Find out wherever most of their reviews come from and then go from there! In the past I preferred Facebook but now I am leaning towards building my Google Reviews. However, reviews can be a little tricky. My general rule of thumb is to look at them as a whole. Do they have more good reviews than bad? Are people actually writing inside the reviews about their own experience or just leaving stars? There are also bound to be a couple bad reviews too. I am a firm believer that “the customer is always right” mentality is bullshit. Sometimes they are assholes. Don’t take one or two bad reviews to heart.
I am aware that I may not be your boudoir photographer. If my work isn’t your style then I would be more than happy to send over recommendations for others that would be more in your wheelhouse. I have a really great circle of photographer friends that I refer to often if I am unavailable or people are looking for something that I don’t offer. There are plenty of photographers (and clients!) to go around. A rising tide lifts all boats.
