COVID hit my passion and creativity hard. I had to close down my business off and on for nearly a year. Finances were extremely tight and my mental health basically tanked. My spark was gone. I used to shoot creative things to keep my passion alive and through the global pandemic I wasn’t able to do that. Frankly, in 2021 it became a job and I started to not love what I did as much. One of the things that I realized was lacking was the fact that I was not shooting anything fun or creative for myself. 2022 was the year that was going to change. I vowed I was going to shoot for myself more. To connect back with the art that I so fell in love with in the first place.
One of the first creative sessions I did was an idea I found on Pinterest. I can’t take credit for the concept because it has been replicated many times before. They are called “Flower Top Sessions”. The basic idea is that the person you are photographing takes off their shirt and bra and holds an entire bouquet of flowers in front of their chest to cover up the goods. Most of the ideas I saw online had the model wearing leggings, jeans or a skirt to dress it up a bit. My goal with this was to keep it a little more casual and down to earth, yet beautiful.
Downstairs from the studio is a floral shop called Regent Floral and Mercantile. In addition to florals they also specialize in house plants and other unique gifts. Brandon is the owner and he is a really great guy. So when I decided I wanted to move forward with doing this flower top session I knew I wanted to support another small business so of course I went directly downstairs and chatted with Brandon about my idea. I showed him a couple screenshots that I had taken from Pinterest and we talked about the casual yet beautiful vision I had. Brandon suggested some wildflower and greenery style bundles. Since he is the expert in that realm I trusted him to come up with something exquisite.
The day of the session I was exited to see what Brandon came up with so when I arrived that morning to pick it up he did better than I could have imagined. Now I am not in the least bit educated in the kind of plants he used but I did know there was babies breath, a few purple fuzz ball looking ones to add some color and a bunch of lovely wild greenery that tied it all together. It was PERFECT! My friend Anna who is another photographer modeled for me that day and we had a blast! We decided to have her wear light colored jeans with nothing on her feet. I felt black leggings would not have fit the vision and dark jeans would clash with the whimsical wildflowers we had.
Overall it turned out exactly how I hoped it would. The session was fun, pushed me out of my comfort zone and left me feeling excited and inspired. What should I do next?
