I am super excited about this months Wonder Woman! I met Alaina at a styled shoot I attended up in Tawas earlier this summer! After following her on social media I instantly knew she was someone that could be my business bestie. What I adore about Alaina is that she is down to earth and you can tell she absolutely loves what she does. She is a floral designer based out of Saginaw and something about her designs make me feel so inspired. These are the type of go-getters I like to keep in my feed. I also may or may not have just hired her for a fun dried piece in the studio too. But that’s a secret so SHHH! Read her interview here:
Who the hell are you?! 😉
Hiiiii! I’m Alaina, owner & designer at flowersbyalaina.
What made you start what it is that you are doing?
I accidentally fell into my career in flowers and have found it to be such a dream! I really don’t feel like this is real life.
It all started when I was looking into leaving my retail 9-5 job. I was absolutely miserable and was desperately looking for a change. a mutual of mine had mentioned that a local flower shop was looking for some extra help, and I was in!
I had never looked into a job like this before. Especially because I could barely tell you what a rose even looked like.. HA.
Working/ training there slowly but surely had me hooked. I just fell in love with the way I could create art with living things. growing and flourishing beautiful flowers. they never cease to do anything but put a smile on people’s faces. even the way they can make you feel. there is so much beauty in them, what’s not to love!?
We all know how covid had hit us all so hard. so many small businesses had been lost & closed down, including the shop I was working at. I didn’t know what to do.
I couldn’t see myself doing anything different with my life. I started to dabble in the “what if’s” of starting my own business. with all the downtime we had, I worked on this so hard & in so many ways.
fast forward to now – who knew I could have the amazing business I have today!? def not me. I truly couldn’t see myself living any other way & I am so grateful for the people who have been so supportive of me and let me have the life I have always dreamed of but didn’t know I could have :’)
What are your long term goals and what are things you are doing now to get there?
my long term goals for my business would be to expand, expand, expand!
each year I have been lucky enough to build a bigger clientele and slowly take on more events. being a floral designer is all hands-on work and you can only do so many things at a time being one person, so I am working towards having associates to help me take on more!
In your opinion, what is the best thing about life?
the best thing about life in my opinion is that there is so much diversity in our world. not only in the world but in this industry specifically. I have had the best time these last few years meeting new people & hearing about where they come from, why they do what they do etc. being different is what makes this world go around & we would not be here without each other!
5. If you could give one piece of advice to other women – what would it be?
if I could give one piece of advice to other women is that it’s not a competition. society puts so much pressure on us to always try to one-up each other & look down on others who have it differently and honestly, it’s miserable. being in this industry, I have met so many amazing women who are nothing but supportive of my business along with so many other women-owned ones. we need so much more encouragement among women & support in this world because we already have it hard enough.
